Police investigating death of man hit by train

Police are still trying to determine what happened to a Portland man before he was killed by a train on Wednesday.
The Portland Police Department and Pam Am Railways are investigating the death of Richard Cobb, 54, of Portland, who was struck by a train at 7:15 p.m. on Wednesday. Police say Cobb was seen walking on the railroad tracks before he was struck.
The accident occurred along Forest Avenue between Woodfords and Walton streets, according to police.
Cobb's death is the third casualty this year related to trains in the Portland area, according to Maine Operation Lifesaver.
"Over the past year along railroad tracks in and around Portland, there have been more frequent trains, faster trains, trains which make less noise, and crossings where train horns are now banned," said Fred Hirsch, state coordinator of Maine Operation Lifesaver, in a statement. "Any or all of these factors are likely to contribute to the increase in serious injury or death on the railroad's private right of way."
